Four is one of the main characters in Divergent by Veronica Roth. He trains the Dauntless faction's new initiates, and he has played a growing role in the life of another main character, Tris.

At the beginning of the book, Tris didn't really know Four that well. Since the book is told from Tris’ perspective, the reader also doesn’t know much about Four in the beginning. He’s a very mysterious character that seems to be holding back his true self. Also, since Four is an initiate trainer and Tris is an initiate, we really only see the strict, reserved side of him in the beginning. At times, he seems like he’s mean and rude, but other times, he seems to be caring and kind.

*THIS NEXT PART CONTAINS SPOILERS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!*

As the book goes on, readers find out that Four has an interest in Tris. He likes her, and their relationship becomes more personal. Four reveals more about himself and plays both the role of trainer and of friend. We see that he is very kind and that there’s more to him than we originally thought. He shows deep affection for Tris and is very loving.

I’m not completely to the end of the book yet, so Four could change more, but that’s what I’ve seen in him so far.
