Currently, I'm reading Divergent by Veronica Roth.

But what does divergent even mean?

According to Dictionary.com, Divergent means:
1. diverging (to turn aside or deviate, as from a path, practice, or plan.)differing; deviating.
2. pertaining to or causing divergence.

I think Veronica Roth titled the book Divergent because of the main character, Beatrice (later called Tris). After taking a test to find out which faction she will live in for the rest of her life, she is told that she is "divergent" and that she doesn't match with any one specific faction. That deviates, or diverges, from the norm because most people are matched with one faction that fits them perfectly. Beatrice matches with multiple factions.

I'm really curious to find out what this will mean for Beatrice, because people tell her that no one can know she is divergent. Is it dangerous to be divergent? Is she going to get hurt? Do people suspect she is divergent? These are all questions I'm going to have to find out as I continue on in the book.

  1. I like how you analyzed and defined the word "divergent" to relate to the book. Seeing as the title was also "Divergent", the parallels that you make from the title and the definition are extremely intriguing.

  2. I really like the way you defined the word divergent. I enjoyed the little hints that you gave about a girl being divergent and that no one can find out that she is divergent. I have always wanted to read this book and you have intrigued me even more to read it.

  3. Tori,
Having read Divergent, hearing all of your ideas and thoughts was excrutiating because I know the ending, but your ideas were all well thought out and interesting. I liked how you defined the word Divergent, because before reading the books I had no idea that was a word.

  4. Okay, so I know I should get started on this book series because everyone is reading it, so first of all congratulations on getting around to the book more than me :)
When I first heard about the book I knew that divergent was a word and I sorta knew what it meant, but I didn't quite get what its relation was to the book. Now I get it, partly because of a trailer I saw in the movie theater (now I understand factions), and partly because your post told me Tris is divergent, meaning she isn't part of any of the factions. Which makes me want to read the series all the more. I hope you like the book, and I hope I get around to it.
