In Divergent by Veronica Roth, the personalities of the characters are very comparable to real-life objects.
Tris, the main character, is like a hard candy with a soft filling. She transferred to the Dauntless faction, which values fearlessness, strength, and boldness. This is why I say that Tris has a hard outside. She faces challenges with confidence and will do whatever she has to in order to protect herself. However, she was originally from the Abnegation faction, which values selflessness and kindness. She still has these values implanted in her heart, even though she is a part of the Dauntless faction. That's why I think she has a soft filling. So, Tris is like a hard candy because she's fearless, but she has a soft filling because she cares for others.
Four, Tris' Dauntless trainer, is like a dark room. In dark rooms, you can't see what's there, so they're very mysterious and a little frightening. Four fits that description well. He's a very mysterious character because sometimes he's tough and scary, but other times he's caring towards others. He doesn't let a lot of his personality show and he's very quiet. When Four is training the Dauntless initiates, he's very stern. But sometimes, he does things to help other characters, such as the time he defended Tris from attackers. I hope that Veronica Roth will reveal more about his character as the book continues.
Eric, another Dauntless trainer, is like a snake because he's very venomous and ruthless. Almost all of the Dauntless initiates are fearful of him because he's not afraid to hurt others to prove a point or get what he wants. He will bite you and kill you with his venom if he doesn't like you or if you make one wrong move.
Tori is someone who helps Tris hide the fact that she is divergent. She reminds me of a Quaker from the days when slaves tried to escape from the South. She keeps Tris' secret and helps her through it.
If anyone reading this post has also read Divergent, I encourage you to compare one of the other characters in the book to another object. I would really like to see what other people think about the other characters in the book.
I agree with all of the connections that you made! They seem strange but they really do make sense if you think about it. I especially like how you compared Tris to a hard candy with a soft filling.

ReplyDeleteCaleb is like a firework. While he is usually reserved, like how the firework is unlit, when he finds something he's passionate about, he'll go down in a blazing fire for that cause, burning just like that firework. Also, he has a large impact, like how a firework sputters around a large area.
